August is the time fruits and vegetables start to ripen and be harvested for the table. Want to get it where you’re camping while the agriculture is the freshest possible? Ditch Parking Lots and Campgrounds for Agritourism!
If camping next to a winery brewery, farm, orchard, museum or wildlife rescue facilities sounds heavenly compared to campgrounds and parking lots, you need to join Harvest Hosts immediately!
In order to participate, you need a membership and a qualified self-contained RV as Host locations do not provide any hookups or services such as bathrooms. No tent-trailers, outdoor kitchens or tents of any kind are allowed. The host sites will provide campers with a level surface to park on. A profile on each business is provided to members and includes information on tours, the number of parking sites, if pets are allowed, and if wi-fi is available.
Because overnight stays are Free – they are limited to one night and you must call ahead and arrive during business hours. Proof of membership and registration upon arrival are required.
Harvest Hosts encourages all RV Members to support local economies by making purchases from their Hosts. When considering how much to spend at a Host, please be generous and keep in mind what you are saving by not staying in a campground. We suggest spending a minimum of $20 in support of your Host. Considering that’s much less than a normal stay at a campground – AND – you get some goodies in return? Win – Win! If you’re camping near an orchard, get some stone fruit for the gallette recipe.
Remember, these are the people who live and work here. This is their passion! Most of them love sharing stories about their wineries, farms, or orchards with others. If you are lucky enough to be invited to sit and enjoy an evening around a bon-fire, don’t miss the chance. This is truly a chance to glimpse into a small slice of their lives.
