June is National Aquarium Month and Albuquerque has, in our humble opinion, one of the nicest aquariums in the southwest – if not the entire United States!. If you are visiting Albuquerque, this is one attraction you don’t want to miss!
The highlight of the Albuquerque BioPark Aquarium is the 285,000 gallon shark tank that features a 38 foot viewing window. The staff takes exceptional care of the tank and the water is crystal clear. You will feel like you are practically one with the fish! Ever of “sleeping with the fishes”? Kids can do just that during one of the special overnight stays. Other exhibits include an artificial coral reef that’s teeming with fish, coral and anemones, a moray eel tunnel and a Gulf Coast exhibit.
The aquarium is located within the Bio Park, which is also a wonderful place to explore, especially in summer. There is the fabulous PNM Butterfly Pavilion featuring several hundred North American butterflies flittering around thousands of nectar plants – and you! Plus, you can watch new butterflies emerge from their chrysalides. Children absolutely love this exhibit!
Albuquerque’s BioPark Zoo has been rated one of the best in the country and is considered a part of the BioPark. Combo tickets are available if you want to take in all three attractions in a day. You can catch a ride on the Thunderbird Express for a relaxing trip around the zoo. The zoo covers a vast area, so it’s a convenient way to travel between exhibit areas and give your feet a rest!
If hunger strikes while looking at all the exhibits, visit the Shark Reef Restaurant where you can continue to watch the fish action while you eat! The restaurant actually grows and harvests food items from the Rio Grande Heritage Farms which is located right in the BioPark.
In the summer, enjoy live concerts at the BioPark and the Zoo. If you’re visiting in December, the River of Lights at the BioPark is a popular Christmas display that everyone in the family will love. Great photo opps!
